During a heritage survey you may encounter cultural material, archaeological features or places of cultural significance.
This could include:
Stone artefacts or stone tool material
Flakes and worked stone
Grinding stones or grinding areas
Shell or midden material
Modified or culturally significant trees
Rock shelters or cultural features
Historic material associated with Aboriginal occupation
Cultural places identified by Traditional Owners
Other material or features that may have cultural or heritage significance
You do not need to decide whether something is an artefact.
If you are unsure – STOP and ask.
If Something is Found
STOP → DON'T TOUCH → PROTECT → NOTIFY
If potential Aboriginal cultural material, a culturally significant place, archaeological feature or other unexpected heritage information is encountered:
STOP activity in the immediate area.
Do not touch, move, collect or disturb the material.
Keep vehicles, machinery and unnecessary people away.
Establish a temporary exclusion area where appropriate.
Notify the JBAC Field Lead and relevant Traditional Owners.
Record only information that you are authorised to record.
Obtain appropriate heritage advice before proceeding.
Work must not recommence in the affected area until the required cultural, contractual and legal processes have been completed and JBAC has confirmed the field direction.

-
Do not assume that everything encountered during a heritage survey can be photographed or recorded.
Before taking photographs, videos, GPS coordinates or other records:
ASK FIRST.
Follow the direction of Traditional Owners, the JBAC Field Lead and the heritage specialist.
Some places, objects, stories or cultural information may be restricted, culturally sensitive or confidential.
Do not:
Share survey photographs on social media
Send survey photographs to people outside the survey team
Photograph culturally sensitive material without permission
Share GPS coordinates or locations
Upload survey information to personal cloud storage or other platforms unless authorised
Distribute heritage information or survey documents without JBAC approval
Cultural information shared during the survey must be treated respectfully and confidentially.
-
Traditional Owners participating in surveys bring cultural knowledge, authority and connection to Country.
Everyone participating in a JBAC survey is expected to:
Listen to and respect Traditional Owner direction
Respect cultural protocols
Keep cultural information confidential
Ask before photographing or recording
Stay within the allocated survey area
Respect avoidance and exclusion areas
Never remove cultural material from Country
Speak up if something may have cultural significance
When in doubt – STOP and ASK.
Protecting Country and cultural heritage is everyone's responsibility.
